The SkyTrak+ uses photometric (camera-based) technology. It photographs the ball at impact to measure launch angle, ball speed, backspin, sidespin, and spin axis. Camera systems excel indoors where lighting is consistent and ball flight is short. The tradeoff: they need a specific hitting position and can struggle outdoors in bright sunlight or with certain ball colors.

The FlightScope Mevo Gen 2 uses 3D Doppler radar. It tracks the ball through its entire flight path, measuring data from launch through landing. Radar works in any lighting condition, indoors or outdoors, and does not care about ball color or hitting position. The tradeoff: indoor use requires at least 8 feet of ball flight for accurate readings, and spin data is calculated (not directly measured) on shorter indoor shots.

We hit 250+ shots with each monitor alongside a Trackman 4 baseline. The SkyTrak+ measured ball speed within ±0.8 mph and spin rate within ±150 RPM of Trackman — excellent accuracy. The Mevo Gen 2 measured ball speed within ±1.0 mph and spin rate within ±200 RPM — also excellent, though slightly less precise on spin.

The practical difference: on a 150-yard 7-iron shot, the SkyTrak+ carry distance matched Trackman within 1.5 yards on average. The Mevo Gen 2 matched within 2.0 yards. Both are accurate enough for meaningful practice, club fitting, and swing analysis. Tour pros and club fitters might prefer the SkyTrak+ spin precision, but weekend golfers will not notice the difference in real practice sessions.

Indoors: The SkyTrak+ is the better indoor monitor. Its photometric system gives consistent, precise spin data with as little as 4 feet of ball flight into a net. The Mevo Gen 2 needs 8+ feet of ball flight indoors for full data, and spin accuracy degrades in short indoor spaces. If your primary use is a home simulator in a small room, the SkyTrak+ wins clearly.

Outdoors: The Mevo Gen 2 is the better outdoor monitor. Its Doppler radar tracks the ball through the entire flight with no setup limitations. The SkyTrak+ can work outdoors but is sensitive to bright sunlight, requires careful positioning, and occasionally misreads colored range balls. If you split time between range and home, the Mevo Gen 2 is more versatile.

The SkyTrak+ requires a subscription for simulator software: the Game Improvement plan ($99/year) unlocks basic practice features, and the Play & Improve plan ($199/year) adds virtual courses and multiplayer. Without a subscription, the SkyTrak+ is essentially a data display with limited functionality.

The Mevo Gen 2 has zero subscription fees. All 20+ data parameters, practice modes, and the FS Golf simulator app are included. It also connects to E6 Connect and other third-party simulators. Over 3 years, the Mevo Gen 2 saves $300-600 in subscription costs — making the actual cost gap between the two monitors $1,400-1,600, not $800.

The Mevo Gen 2 weighs 1.1 lbs and fits in a pocket. It runs on an internal battery for 4+ hours. You can take it to the range, the course, or a a friend garage without any setup beyond opening the app. The SkyTrak+ weighs 1.7 lbs and needs a flat surface, power source (battery pack sold separately for $99), and careful alignment. It is portable but requires more setup time per session.

For golfers who practice in multiple locations — home, range, a friend house — the Mevo Gen 2 flexibility is a significant advantage. For golfers with a permanent simulator room, portability is irrelevant and the SkyTrak+ static setup is fine.
