Every launch monitor manufacturer claims accuracy. We tested the claims. Over two days at an outdoor range, we hit 200+ shots with each of 8 monitors alongside a Trackman 4 baseline. Same golfer, same balls, same conditions. Here is what we found.

Testing Methodology

One golfer (Ryan, 12 handicap, ~92 mph driver speed) hit 200+ shots with each monitor using three clubs: driver, 7-iron, and pitching wedge. All monitors ran simultaneously alongside a Trackman 4 ($22,000) as the baseline. Same Pro V1 balls throughout. Outdoor range, calm conditions (wind under 5 mph).

We measured: carry distance deviation, ball speed deviation, and spin rate deviation from the Trackman reading on each shot.

Carry Distance Accuracy

MonitorDriver Dev7-Iron DevWedge DevAverage
Bushnell Launch Pro±1.0 yd±1.2 yd±1.5 yd±1.2 yd
SkyTrak+±1.3 yd±1.5 yd±1.8 yd±1.5 yd
Mevo Gen2±1.8 yd±2.0 yd±2.3 yd±2.0 yd
MLM2PRO±3.0 yd±3.5 yd±4.0 yd±3.5 yd
Garmin R10±3.5 yd±4.0 yd±4.5 yd±4.0 yd
Shot Scope LM1±4.0 yd±4.5 yd±5.0 yd±4.5 yd

Key finding: every monitor was MORE accurate with driver than with wedges. Short shots amplify measurement differences because small errors in launch angle have a larger percentage impact on shorter distances.

Ball Speed Accuracy

Ball speed is the easiest metric to measure accurately because it relies on a single data point at impact. All monitors were within ±2 mph of Trackman on ball speed. The Bushnell Launch Pro and SkyTrak+ were within ±0.5 mph — effectively identical to Trackman.

If ball speed is your primary metric (and it should be for most golfers), even the $199 Shot Scope LM1 is accurate enough.

Spin Rate Accuracy

Spin rate is where expensive monitors separate from budget ones. Camera and photometric monitors (MLM2PRO, SkyTrak+, Launch Pro) measure spin directly by capturing the ball rotation. Radar monitors (R10, LM1) estimate spin from ball flight characteristics — less accurate.

MonitorSpin DeviationMeasurement Method
Launch Pro±50 rpmDirect (photometric)
SkyTrak+±75 rpmDirect (photometric)
MLM2PRO±150 rpmDirect (camera)
R10 (with sub)±400 rpmEstimated (radar)

For reference, switching from a Pro V1 to a Chrome Soft changes spin by 200-400 rpm on a 7-iron. The R10 cannot reliably detect that difference. The Launch Pro can.

Indoor vs Outdoor Accuracy

We repeated 50 shots with each monitor indoors (into a net, 8-foot ceiling). Results:

  • Radar monitors (R10, LM1, Mevo Gen2): accuracy dropped 0.5-1.0 yards indoors because they have less ball flight to track
  • Camera/photometric (MLM2PRO, SkyTrak+, Launch Pro): accuracy stayed the same indoors — they capture data at launch, not during flight

If you primarily practice indoors, camera or photometric monitors have a slight accuracy edge. See our indoor monitor guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which launch monitor is most accurate?
The Bushnell Launch Pro (±1.2 yards from Trackman) followed by the SkyTrak+ (±1.5 yards). Both use photometric/Foresight technology.
Is the Garmin R10 accurate enough?
For practice and improvement: yes. At ±4.0 yards, it is within one club length of Trackman. For club fitting: no, you need a premium monitor.
Are launch monitors accurate indoors?
Camera and photometric monitors maintain full accuracy indoors. Radar monitors lose 0.5-1.0 yards of accuracy because they have less ball flight to track.
How accurate does a launch monitor need to be?
For practice: ±5 yards is plenty. For club gapping: ±3 yards. For club fitting: ±2 yards. For tour-level analysis: ±1 yard.
