Why Cold Costs You Distance
Two things happen at once, and they are separate effects.
The air gets denser. Cold air is heavier than warm air, so the ball meets more resistance for the whole flight. This is the part that scales with how far the ball travels, which is why the driver loses the most yards in absolute terms.
The ball gets firmer. A cold golf ball does not compress as fully at impact, so it leaves the face with less energy. A ball left in a car boot overnight in January is measurably firmer than the same ball at room temperature.
That second effect is why keeping a spare ball in a trouser pocket and rotating every few holes is not superstition. It is the only variable here you can actually control.
Why Short Irons Lose Proportionally More
This is the part most articles get backwards, and the chart makes it obvious.
A driver loses about 2 yards per 10°F from 250, which is 0.8 percent. A pitching wedge loses about 1.3 yards from 105, which is 1.2 percent. In absolute yards the driver loses more; as a share of the shot, the wedge loses more.
The reason is that the compression penalty applies at impact regardless of how far the ball is going to travel, while the air-density penalty accumulates over the flight. On a wedge there is very little flight for air density to work on, so compression dominates.
The practical version: in the cold, your gaps at the short end tighten up more than you expect. If you normally have 10 yards between wedges, expect closer to 8 or 9 at 40°F.
What This Chart Does Not Cover
Temperature is one of four things moving your carry number, and it is rarely the biggest.
Wind dwarfs it. A 10 mph headwind costs a mid-iron more than a 30-degree temperature drop.
Altitude works the other way and is roughly 1.1 to 1.2 percent per 1,000 feet of elevation. A Denver round plays about 6 percent longer than the same round at sea level, which more than cancels a cold morning.
Ball choice matters at the margins. Lower-compression balls hold up slightly better in the cold, which is the one time a soft ball has a genuine performance argument rather than a feel argument. Our compression chart lists every ball we have measured.
Use the chart for club selection, not for rebuilding your yardage book. One club at the extremes, nothing at all between 65 and 80.
