At $100 the Under Armour Storm is the most waterproof jacket you can buy without spending $250+. The UA Storm technology kept me completely dry through a 3-hour round in steady moderate rain. The stretch fabric does not restrict your backswing — my driver ball speed was only 1 mph lower than without a jacket, which is within margin of error. The hood stays put without a hat and the hand pockets have waterproof zippers. My only complaint: it runs warm in humidity above 80%, but that is true of every waterproof jacket.

Gore-Tex is the gold standard for waterproofing and the Galvin Green proves why. In the heaviest rain I played in — a 30-minute downpour that soaked through my Under Armour on the sleeves — the Galvin Green stayed bone dry inside. The Paclite membrane is the thinnest Gore-Tex variant, which means it has the least swing restriction of any fully waterproof jacket. At $300 it is expensive, but if you play through rain regularly, it is a legitimate investment that lasts 5+ years.

The Zero Restriction line was literally designed for golfers — the pattern engineering eliminates restriction at every swing joint. At $250 it splits the difference between the Under Armour and Galvin Green. Waterproofing is excellent in light to moderate rain but lets moisture through in heavy sustained downpours. If you play in drizzle and light rain more than downpours, this is the pick.

Golf jackets use water column ratings measured in millimeters. Under 5,000mm: water resistant (drizzle only). 5,000-10,000mm: waterproof (moderate rain for 1-2 hours). 10,000-20,000mm: highly waterproof (heavy rain for 3+ hours).
